Site Building
If you're ready to build your own site here's some tools to get you started. Remember, if your goal is to have an online business building your site is only one part of the process. You'll want to do brainstorming and research before you even start the actual building.
Site Build It! Action Guide
Site Build It! from SiteSell offers a complete online business building system. The process is very methodical and includes many tools for learning online marketing, niche brainstroming, page building, site marketing and hosting. The system costs $299 for an annual subscription.
But the step-by-step instructions are actually free to anyone. They brake the process down into a 10 day Action Guide. The "days" are actually just an arbitrary way of discribing the steps and a day can actually take as much as a month to complete if you follow the instructions implicitly.
Still it's a wonderful overview of what it takes to build a successful online business based on a theme-based content website. Well worth reading. And if you want to do site-based online marketing the product and system is excellent. I have a Site Build It! site of my own.
WordPress
Wordpress is an easy-to-use system for building a blog. That blog can be hosted by them or you can have it hosted somewhere else. As Wikipedia descibes it...
WordPress is a blog publishing system written in PHP. All data is stored in a MySQL database.
There's actually two versions of Wordpress. One lets you build a blog that is hosted on their servers. There's also an Open Source version that you can use to build blog-style sites and host however you choose. The WordPress.com site lets you easily build a site that they host. The WordPress.org site is far more flexible and requires a bit more knowledge and effort. But it is far more powerful and flexible.
On the WordPress.org site you can download and install a software script called WordPress. To do this you need a web host who meets the minimum requirements and a little time. WordPress is completely customizable and can be used for almost any kind of site. Most good hosts also offer a "one-click" install which means you don't have to download from WordPress.org and there is no installation. Takes about 10 minutes to get a site online this way.
The WordPress.com site lets you get started with a new and free WordPress-based blog in seconds, but varies in several ways and is less flexible than the WordPress you download and install yourself.
